MISSING ARTWORK - Paul Coze's "Phoenix"

On a recent trip past the Town & Country shopping center at Camelback Road and 20th St in Phoenix, the Paul Coze sculpture "Phoenix" (from 1962) was missing.

The piece is significant to Phoenix. If you've been to Terminal 2 at Sky Harbor, the murals over the security checkpoint are Coze's. The phoenix in those murals is a copy of the now-missing sculpture.

Any news on this piece's whereabouts -- and pressure to RED Development to make sure it goes back! -- is most welcome.

Downtown Phoenix from afar at night

It's time for a new upload of pictures, I think. So here are some pictures of downtown Phoenix at night from afar. Thank goodness for long-exposure photography!

Oh, there's also a shot of the Heard Museum. Tonight was their annual Moondance Gala benefit performance and the headline acts were Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson.

What's wrong with downtown Phoenix?

If you haven't heard, the City of Phoenix won its fight to keep the "green" parking lot on the former Sahara/Ramada Inn block.

This ruling definitely left me speechless but honestly, I wasn't surprised. It summarizes everything that's wrong with Phoenix, which is to say that we lack creativity with dealing with historic buildings and empty parcels of land.

I guess that downtown Phoenix will be the first (and only?) downtown that's dedicated to the ease of getting cars around but not people. Between this and the new 1,200-space garage at the Biomedical Complex, there will soon be more parking spaces in downtown than there are people.

I'm disappointed in the City of Phoenix for forcing this to happen and I'm disappointed in ourselves for letting the City do this. Next time, we must fight harder.,

An observation...

I don't know if this is indicative of anything but I do have an observation to make about Greg Stanton and Wes Gullett campaign signs.

In central Phoenix, there are a lot of campaign signs for the two candidates. There are a lot of campaign signs for Mr. Stanton in front of homes and private businesses up and down Central Avenue and in the streets nearby. On the other hand, there are a lot of signs for Mr. Gullett attached to fences that surround vacant lots or are attached to vacant buildings.

Again, I'm not sure if this is indicative of anything but it's definitely something worth noting.

My snarky self releases this survey: In central Phoenix, 9 out of 10 empty lots prefer Wes Gullett to be mayor. 9 out of 10 homes prefer Greg Stanton.
